My journey in sports turf science started off when I was sixteen years old. Starting with a summer placement at a local golf course in Co. Laois, I gained hands-on experience early on during those four years and it was formative in shaping my interest in sports turf science. I followed this by studying sports turf science at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin which provided me with a solid foundation in all aspects of turf science and lawn care. Learning about soil composition, grass types, irrigation, and maintenance techniques really prepared me for the challenges ahead.
My journey continued with further study at Ohio University, this international exposure really broadened my perspective and introduced me to different approaches in turf management which has proved invaluable.
Working on golf courses during major tournaments was an exciting and unforgettable opportunity. Baltimore, Orlando, and New York—each with its unique climate and course conditions—presented interesting challenges to say the least!
Being part of the French Open and Ryder Cup preparations at La Golf Nationale in 2018 was an equally remarkable event in my career. The Ryder Cup, in particular, is a prestigious event that brings together top golfers from Europe and the United States and again working there, gave me great exposure to seeing how these top courses are maintained and prepared for major events. For any greenkeeper getting the opportunities to work on top courses on the world stage is a rare opportunity. After this I moved to Australia for 8 months and whilst there I worked as a greenkeeper during the Australian Open.
When I returned home to Ireland, I secured a job in Adare Manor as a greenkeeper for preparations for the Pro AM and the future Ryder Cup 2027. I joined Greenfeet Lawncare in September 2020 as a Greenkeeper working alongside Anthony Fitzpatrick. In the following year the opportunity came up to take over the role as Greenfeet Representative for the Offaly/Westmeath area. I was delighted at this chance as it offered me the opportunity to work for myself and generate new business in this region. With Greenfeet specialising in Robotic Mowers I also sell and install a wide range of robotic mowers both for the domestic and commercial market.
